Hello Kitty started 35 years ago in 1976, when she first appeared in the US. She was designed by Yuko Shimizu and the first Hello Kitty product was a vinyl coin purse in 1974.

A spokesman for Sanrio said that Hello Kitty is not normally given a mouth because "without the mouth, it is easier for the person looking at Hello Kitty to project their feelings onto the character" and that "the person can be happy or sad together with Hello Kitty."
